January 19th Food Diary

Day 1/50

Today was the first day of my 50 day plan, at the end of which I get to see my long distance boyfriend again! (on 3/10) The plan consists of:

  • Steady state cardio (LISS) for at least 30 minutes, 6 days a week. Some examples are 4+ mph walking or elliptical.
  • HIIT at least once a week.
  • Resistance training, in the form of lifting or plyometrics, at least twice a week.
  • Creating at least a 500 cal deficit a day

I’ll be recording my exercise and whether or not I hit the deficit on my food diaries 🙂 If all goes well, I should be able to lose at least a pound a week, putting me down 7+lbs by the end of the 50 days.

January 17th Food Diary

Calories: 1190

Spent the day packing to go back to school and feeling generally quite sad for no reason, plus missing my boyfriend. The main thought that comforted me was the fact that back at school, I can eat what I want when I want without feeling guilty… eating clean is so much easier when you don’t live with family!

I went to a middle eastern restaurant with my family at night, and they had a FABULOUS vegan mezze platter, with lots of little bowls of deliciousness: falafel, hummus, baba ghanouj, dolma, tabbouleh, salad, and pickles. Although, it did lead to me eating more than planned because I didn’t know they had such a vegan-friendly option.

January 16th Food Diary

Second day at my grandma’s, and I got away 100% clean eating… except for at the end of the day when I finished off a taco shell she wasn’t eating. Curses!

We went to a lake with her dog, who I was able to hold comfortably despite her being 40 lbs! I haven’t lifted in awhile, but it was a relief that I haven’t totally lost my strength.

January 15th Food Diary

Calories: 1360

First full day staying at my grandma’s. I brought an oatmeal mix I made for myself back home for breakfast/lunch, so that was nice… then came dinner at her favorite Mexican restaurant. My plan was to just get a side of plain beans and eat some chips and guacamole. That was all going fine until the waitress (who knows my grandma) kept making comments on my “small” dinner and how I needed to eat more! Sigh. The beans and guac were the only vegan items on the menu, lady. And their salads contain more cheese than… salad.

I felt like it was embarrassing for my grandma so I ate a bunch more chips along with my beans to prove I was getting plenty for dinner. So then I went from a nicely sized dinner of 400 cals, to 700 calories of social pressure.

Then at midnight I got bizarre cravings for fruit–probably because of a blood sugar crash after all those tortilla chips. At least it was fruit and not pastries that I went for!

The raspberries there were SO GOOD I got a box.. and ate them all in a day. Including on top of my oatmeal. Why can’t the ones we get back home be this good?

January 14th Food Diary

[Note: I think I’ll stop posting my calorie counts here soon because I’ll just be checking off a box saying whether or not I was able to make my planned 500 cal deficit! However I’ll still post all my food diaries, of course.]

I managed to do most of what I slacked off on the day before, like laundry, progress photos (well, pre-50-day-challenge photos), packing for my trip to my grandma’s house at night, etc. She is just the loveliest individual and I LOVE visiting her… she’s 84 and still totally sharp and sweet and fun as ever. She recently moved from her house to a retirement apartment, so the kitchen is minimal (no oven or stove) as the place also serves meals. Anyways, that means I always have to be strategic with my food packing and planning, especially because there are NO vegan friendly options in her town, and she’s a social butterfly who loves to eat out and knows all the restaurant owners. Literally every dish everywhere includes dairy or eggs or meat unless I ask for weird side combos. (Which I did end up doing)

Anyways, at night my parents wanted to go to dinner before I left for my grandma’s since I hadn’t seen a lot of them lately, after spending the week with my boyfriend. I managed to evade a high-cal crisis by suggesting Mongolian hotpot, where you put whatever you want in a broth so you know EXACTLY what’s in there… or so I thought. I got a mushroom broth with greens, mushrooms, tofu, and vermicelli knots to put in it. About 45 mins in I started to feel this bizarre sensation of pressure on my face, like my head was in a vice, there was also pressure on my chest, and my legs and arms got tingly and weak. My mom was sure it was MSG, but the waiter said they didn’t use MSG. So that was fun and… terrifying.

Fun and terrifying part 2: the 4 hour drive to my grandma’s. Fun at first as I sipped tea and blasted metal songs, then terrifying when there was so much fog towards the end that I could only see one carlength in front of me. Thanks to poorly designed streets, I ended up unknowingly driving in the shoulder of the freeway while exiting (and I only knew the exit was there thanks to my phone telling me to turn since no signs were visible), and then I almost ended up turning straight into oncoming traffic because some left turn only lanes off the freeway gave NO indication of where to go, and I couldn’t see any traffic lights. Thanks to an impatient car behind me taking it upon themselves to pass me and show me the way, I didn’t die.

January 13th Food Diary

My boyfriend left to go back to school… at 6am, so I didn’t get to see him.

Instead, I had a meeting with a professor I’ve been working with who’s a bigshot in the field… and he called me inspirational and brilliant and told me that I can be a co-author on his next big paper since I gave him the idea for half the experiment. As an undergraduate. I can’t even believe it! Now I get to call gene sequencing labs and neuroscience professors to get them on board… 😀

My big plan for the rest of the day was: go to the gym, go for a photo-hike (for canyon bird photos), bake cookies to mail to my boyfriend, and start getting ready for my road trip the next night. Instead I just felt lethargic with a big headache all day–I have a feeling it was a migraine.

But despite my general inability to get things done, I did come up with a big elaborate fitness/body recomp plan for the next 2 months (and beyond). I overanalyzed and over-scienced it, in rather typical fashion for me.  I’ll detail the plans out in another post: the 50 day challenge! If I stick to it, I could hit my initial aesthetic goals before seeing my boyfriend again, and more importantly get a LOT fitter. (And sticking to it will be so much easier now thanks to IF)

January 4th-12th Food Diary

So I’m just going to summarize the last week’s net calories because it all went pretty similarly: I spent every day with my boyfriend, he was all nice and kept bringing me all sorts of good food or we’d go to a restaurant, I overate and felt sick. We also celebrated our 4 year anniversary at my favorite restaurant… and 2 out of the 3 restaurants we went to this week were vegan. That was so sweet of him to agree to!

Because I wanted to make the most of our time together, I made a conscious decision to just put off the weight loss attempts last week and redouble my efforts as soon as he left, which was the morning of the 13th. I told him about it all, and he said something that made me ridiculously happy: “I love that you care about your body,” as an appreciation of how hard I’m trying for my health and fitness goals despite my horrendous metabolism (1000 cals a day) and love of food. And he always compliments how I look regardless of my level of skinny-fatness, which is crazy to me.

Anyways, despite this week of overeating, there is still good news: my main goal for this break has been achieved, in that I stayed 100% vegan and I didn’t gain weight, which is amazing for me while surrounded by family and friends and food 24/7! Although I didn’t get to the gym while home from college, at least I’m heading in the right direction with my at-home habits: hopefully next summer I’ll be able to maintain what I’ll be working extra hard for this spring!
